Loh Lexuan

Day 1 and 2

On day one, I was super excited for OELP. The plane trip on board SQ was anticipated too as not only was I towing the plane with my classmates, I was also on board the top airline in the world. On the airplane, they handed out hot towels and we had our personal inflight entertainment. We were also provided with pillows and blankets and the inflight entertainment had a wide range of games, movies and shows. I was impressed with the friendliness of the flight attendants. What further impressed me was that as it was Yu Hong's birthday, they brought out a whole chocolate cake to celebrate for him. I was shocked and envious at the same time. This caused me to reflect on why Singapore Airlines was the best in the world. Well, they certainly had excellent service and facilities, they even took the initiative to celebrate someone's birthday for me. After witnessing these first hand, I was not suprised that we were ranked first. As for the train ride to Nanjing on the bullet train, it was a pleasant one and I thought about why Singapore could not have a bullet train. It was probably due to limited land space and also the fact that the bull let train was too fast to travel around Singapore. On the second day, we visited Nanjing Bole Middle school and I was impressed by their wonderful hospitality of the students and the teachers. Our buddies did not hesitate to fill us in and answer our questions. They were extremely warm towards us and always took the initiative to make us feel comfortable. Sitting through the lessons, I understood better about their way of life and their education system. It was different from Singapore. Lessons were fixed at forty five minutes with a ten minute break in between and school started from seven twenty to five. They had longer school hours than us. They also had a fixed lunch from the school and did not get to choose to buy from any stalls. Also, they did not have CCAs. What made me even more impressed was that the students were all listening attentively in class and someone always replied when the teacher asked a question, unlike RV students, who tend to shy away or look anywhere but at the teacher when in the same situation. The China students are not afraid of giving their answers even if it may be incorrect, but SG students have such a fear. This is one point which I believe we all can improve on. Also, there was a lesson in which the class chairpersons would conduct the class and think of activities for the class to do during that lesson. In Singapore, we do not have such an opportunity and I find it interesting that they have such a class. They get to gain more experience from such lessons and I feel that these will actually be useful in the future when we step up to serve the society.

Hiiiii.
My name is Loh Le Xuan. Chinese name 卢乐璇。My parents named me this because the 乐 in my name means happy and they wished for me to be happy. I'm from 2J. My CCA is concert band and I love reading. My favorite food is ice cream and I play the clarinet. I have a tendency to reread books that I like. I like to watch movies too. I think of myself as quite cheerful and someone who smiles quite a lot. Since I came into RV, life has been extremely different and a lot of things around me changed. I myself changed quite abit too.  I had to adapt fast and I had to manage a busy school life and my life at home. It was a little bit of a struggle at first as I was usually tired after a busy day at school and I still had to travel home by the mrt. Still, after getting used to it, it is actually not that bad now. For me, life in RV has been fulfilling so far and I am looking forward to another wonderful year in this school.

平凡中的不平凡

This is ordinary yet extraordinary as it represents a students daily life. To me, even if something is ordinary, there are always aspects of it which makes it extraordinary. This might be an ordinary sight yet it also represents something special since the canteen is a place where to me, students get closer. Classmates eat toghther almost everyday and they chat over their meals, finding their common interests and getting to know each other more. When we queue up to buy food at the canteen, my friends and i try to get infront of each other while we queue up. This happens sometimes and we still do that, this definitely brought us closer to each other. Everyday, theres something different to talk about. Some might say you can do that at any other place, but really, school is one of the places where students interact with their fellow friends. To me, this is the 平凡中的不平凡.

RV60

RV60 was a bittersweet experience for me. For me, there was a lot of hard work put into it to play the  piece for the overture. I am in concert band, hence I am playing the overture, which is the final product and 15 minutes long. We had to memorize 5 pages worth of scores and memorizing the
scores included the notes, the rhythms, where to stop and where to come in. It really was not easy to do all that. Even though there was hard work put in, still, the ending product was extremely grand and I felt a sense of accomplishment being able to witness it. It was like all the
hardwork had finally paid off. There was the music , dance and it was a wonderful mass display. Various CCAs came together for the final product and I felt that it was really spectacular. I never imagined that CCAs that had such little in common and did different things could come together and put up such a wonderful performance. This mass display proved me wrong . I feel that RV60 was certainly a successful event as everyone contributed to the event in one way or another. This makes me feel proud that the school can pull off such a wonderful event and I feel extremely proud to be an Rvian. Looking at the RV60 balloon, I feel like RV can soar greater heaights, higher than the balloon, and we can also be as bright as the balloon in the beautiful sky, just like how RV is in a wonderful environment. RV60 was indeed grand, and I feel great seeing what we achieved through all the hard work we have put in.

Reflection on  Chinagy

As this is my first time going to a Chingay parade, I have to admit, I had mixed feelings about the
whole thing at first.

First of all, when I found out that I would be going to watch a Chinagy parade, my first feeling was one of dread. I wondered whether it would be something that was boring with many other people whom I did not know, besides my school mates. I thought that it would take place at a crowded place
where we would have to squeeze and in order to be able to see the parade, I would have to crane my
neck.

On the other hand, I was curious. I wondered what the parade would actually show if the school decided that we should go and watch it. If it was not as boring as I thought it out to be, what did it have to showcase that made so many people want to go to it?

On the actual day, I found out that Chingay was actually a really wonderful event. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The atmosphere was lively, the helpers were all friendly, and I found myself loowing forward to the start of the parade.

The parade emphasized many different things, like many people coming together to make it a success. I was awed at the number of performers and backstage helpers. They must have put in a lot of effort to present such a wonderful product. This led me to think of how important teamwork was. Since so many people were involved, communication and coordination was definitely needed or things might not have worked out. Producing such a wonderful performance was definitely not easy and it definitely took a lot of effort,

Also, the parade showcased many different items, and each item had its own special importance.
Each item also came from a different religion and represented the different cultures. This got mthinking, these items represented the different cultures from Singapore. All these items came
together in this one big event, just like how the different races can come together for Singapore to
soar to greater heights.

The finale was the most wonderful part, with full of vibrant and wonderful colours. It also showcased he many light bulbs designed by different people. It was concluded with me thinking about the theme for this year and the voyage to SG 100. Lights of legacy. Brighter Singapore. I hope that in our path in the next fifty years, towards our next point in our journey, it will be filled with hope, light, brightness, joy, wonderful memories, and most important of all, great outcomes. May we have a Sinagpore that is able to make use of the legacy from our founding fathers, and create our very own legacy from one great legacy.

Reflection on poverty and happiness.

As people of today place more importance in material goods and wealth, most people usually become unhappy in the face of poverty. They feel that being poor is not a good thing, as they cannot afford material comfort and luxirous items that money can buy. In my opinion though, money is not necessarily the key to happiness . You can be rich, and yet, you are still uncontented. For example, only cannot buy you a healthy body, love or true friendship. Being rich can only get you so far in being happy. There have been cases of people who are poor yet happy. This is because of one that no, they are content with what they have. They do not complain or lament about how unfair life is, that they do not have what the rich people have. Hence they do not mind that they are poor. You do not have to be rich to be happy.  This is what I feel towards the subject

Reflection on national monuments and its preservation .

I feel that one of the sites in Singapore we should preserve is the National Museum of Singapore. It is
Singapore's oldest museum and the history dates backs to 1849. I feel that it is a very important monument to preserve as it is one museum that focuses on exhibits related to Singapore's history. It is an important part of our history. We need to have an avenue for us to remember and revisit our roots and our humble beginnings and what better place than the oldest museum in Singapore? The Singapore National musuem is not just a building, but a place worthy of preserving because of the heritage and value it has. The future generation will then also have a place to see and witness exhibits related to their country's history. While Singapore may be a fast paced country with many modern buildings and limited land area, what is a country without monuments to preserve pieces of its past? Hence I feel that it is important that we preserve not only the national Museum of Sinapore, but as many Mounments as we can.
